The Joint Commission Recognizes 118 Community Health Systems-Affiliated Hospitals as Top Performers on Key Quality Measures®

FRANKLIN, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 2015-- The Joint Commission today named 118 hospitals affiliated with Community Health Systems, Inc. (NYSE: CYH) as 2014 Top Performers on Key Quality Measures®.

Only 1,043 – or approximately one-third – of eligible United States hospitals were included on the annual list published by the Joint Commission, the leading accrediting agency for healthcare organizations. Top Performers were recognized for improving performance on evidence-based interventions shown to increase the chances of healthy outcomes for patients with certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, inpatient psychiatric services, stroke, venous thromboembolism, perinatal care, immunization, tobacco treatment and substance abuse.

Of the 118 CHS-affiliated hospitals recognized this year, 101 have appeared on the list more than once. Twenty-five CHS-affiliated hospitals have achieved the recognition for the five consecutive years it has been awarded, out of 117 hospitals nationwide to do so.

“Being named a Top Performer is the result of all physicians, nurses and caregivers in a hospital following established evidence-based practices that improve outcomes for their patients,” said Wayne T. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of Community Health Systems, Inc. “We congratulate all recipient hospitals for their achievement and commend them for their work to enhance the delivery of quality care.”

Top Performers were required to meet three stringent performance criteria based on 2014 accountability measure data, according to the Joint Commission:

  • Achieve cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures;
  • Achieve performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure with at least 30 denominator cases; and
  • Have at least one core measure set that had a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and within that measure set, achieve a performance rate of 95 percent or above on all applicable individual accountability measures.
