Community Health Systems, Inc. (NYSE: CYH) (“CHS” or the “Company”) released its 2023 Community Impact Report today detailing the many ways the organization is positively affecting the communities it serves. The report highlights the breadth of services offered by CHS-affiliated healthcare systems, the Company’s substantial economic impact, and efforts to address social issues, protect the planet, and improve the human condition.
In 2022, CHS affiliates provided care for more than 15 million patient encounters across more than 1,000 sites of care. The Community Impact Report features the Company’s work to ensure high-quality health services and the organization’s commitment to patient safety, including an 89% reduction in the Serious Safety Event Rate (“SSER”) since the baseline established more than a decade ago, representing thousands of patients spared from harm.
Charity care totaled $1.4 billion in 2022. CHS hospitals also offer substantial discounts for uninsured patients and provide eligibility screening services to help enroll patients in insurance plans, Medicaid, and other financial assistance programs for those who qualify. Last year, 63,015 patients obtained healthcare coverage through these programs.
The 2023 Community Impact Report includes information about the ways CHS is strengthening its workforce, such as the new Pathways Program, a suite of enhanced benefits to help employees achieve educational, career and financial goals. In its first year, Pathways paid $6.5 million in student loan payments on behalf of more than 2,500 employees and covered more than $1.1 million in professional healthcare license or certification fees for employees.
CHS investments in 2022 include capital expenditures totaling $475 million to add, expand or enhance hospital and outpatient locations, making healthcare services more accessible and benefitting residents who live where CHS has a presence. Millions of dollars in charitable giving, thousands of hours of employee volunteerism, health fairs, educational programs and other community-based activities further contribute to quality of life and wellbeing in each market. And, more than $600 million in property, sales and other taxes paid in 2022 supported local, state, and federal governments, schools, and community infrastructure.
Many other topics are covered in the report, including emergency preparedness, data security, efforts to manage environmental impact, compliance programs, and the Company’s commitment to ethical conduct and effective governance.
“Our healthcare systems are significant contributors to the overall quality of life and economic health of every community we serve,” said Tim Hingtgen, chief executive officer of Community Health Systems, Inc. “In this report, we’re proud to share information about our very positive community impact and to feature some of the remarkable caregivers and support teams who actively ensure that we fulfill our purpose which is to help people get well and live healthier by providing safe, quality healthcare, building enduring relationships with our patients, and providing value for the people and communities we serve.”
